The Purpose of this Journey

What should the church look like in an increasingly post-Christian America?

How should we worship? How large should our congregations be? What should our pastors look like, and how famous is too famous?

How should our churches engage the community? How should our churches go about reaching out to those on the margins of society? How should our churches treat the homeless, and how should our churches evangelize?

This summer, I will be exploring all of these questions as I travel the country and prepare for ordination into the ministry of God's Church. I will be praying, researching, and worshiping my way across America, listening for God's guidance throughout the whole journey and recording my experiences here. From suburban megachurches to inner city safe havens, I aim to get the full American Christian experience as I seek after God's will this summer.

In the fall, these experiences will be focused into an independent study on the church and the community called "Enclaves and Embassies: Churches' Engagement with the Local Community." In the meantime, I've got a long drive ahead of me . . .
