Song of the Day:
"One of These Days" (Doves)
Well, it's 4:30 on Friday morning.
I've been typing this stuff up since about 2PM Sunday afternoon with a few breaks for driving, eating, and conversations with other humans. I think I finally understand why it is that I allowed myself a Sunday off this weekend: It was to recover from all this typing. Saddleback and Mosaic gave me plenty of material to cover, and there are quite a few important subjects on which I barely touched-- worship wars, the SBC inerrancy controversies, the ludicrously exploitative Christian music industry, etc. These will likely become their own blog posts in the coming weeks. I've been loving the fact that my hotel room here in Kingman, AZ, is only $44 a night (which is even cheaper than camping in a lot of places), and it looks like I'm going to be enjoying this room for one more night since there's no way I'm driving to Flagstaff after staying up this late. I'm within about 200 miles of the Grand Canyon, so I figure I'll head that way on Saturday and find a nice place to chill out for the night. If the weather's not too sweltering, I may even pitch my little tent in lieu of a cheap hotel, and then I'll take in the Canyon on Sunday morning (which was actually my original game plan anyway). Besides, I really need to spend tomorrow fine-tuning some of my Texas travel schedule and getting in touch with a few people. Amazing how easily that stuff slips through the cracks when you try to do two such big churches in one weekend.
As usual, blogspot isn't letting me keep all four Mosaic posts on the front page, so here's a table of contents for both Mosaic and Saddleback with links to all parts of the write-ups:
"Mosaic: When Church Looks like Target"
Part 1: Background and "Big Box Contemporary"
Part 2: Worship and a Word on the Contemporary VS. Traditional Battle
Part 3: Sermon (Rehoboam and Jeroboam)
Part 4: Hanging Out with Artists, Concluding Remarks, and Personal Reflections
"Saddleback: When Church Goes on Vacation"
Part 1: Background Information and Setting
Part 2: Worship and Patriotism
Part 3: Sermon (Romans 7) and a Note on Pills, Prayer, and the Pastorate
Part 4: Worship in the Cafe and Closing Thoughts
Again, no new church this weekend, but I may write up a few random musings anyway.
Next work-related stop: Austin, TX.
Peace and Blessings,
Tom
