Song of the Day: "The Cloud of Unknowing" (Gorillaz)
Okay, while I'm working on other stuff, I want to throw something out there, and even though the remaining weeks of this project may offer too much other work to explore this further, I will definitely be working on it in the fall:
In looking at some of the megas, I've seen some amazing international aid work being done through fundraising, but I've recently been wondering: Can raising money for folks overseas sometimes be used to deflect feelings of guilt at not interacting with people in need here? Obviously, I don't want to discount the amazing work these churches are doing, and we definitely need their contributions, but is it okay to let that international work take the place of local missions and outreach in some situations? Is it detrimental for a church to specialize on international aid and allow other churches/organizations to focus on the local? Many of the members of these churches will never actually get to meet the people their funds go to help; is that okay or not? And none of these are intended to be leading or judging questions; I just want to explore all of this. If the work is being done, do people really need to experience face-to-face outreach? What are the pros and cons of this?
Just some food for thought.
Peace and Blessings,
Tom
